Just Another Mock Draft

Is April The Best Sports Month of the Year?! (The Masters, The Draft, Baseball Season)

It only took me 28 years to notice that April is the best sports month of the year. Start off with baseball season, then The Masters, NBA Playoffs, and finish it off with the NFL Draft.

How the FU** does Mel Kiper still have a job?? AND how is he still the number one draft guy at ESPN instead of Todd McShay?? Not only is he the second best guy at his network (I’m sure the analyst’s, the cafeteria workers, and the old man across the street are better than Kiper at this point) but there are so many better draft analysts out there that ESPN could hire in his place and actually give some good, thoughtful insight without being a total asshole. Mike Mayock is one of the best in the business along with Daniel Jeramiah (NFL Network), Matt Miller (Bleacher Report)and even Chris Simms (Bleacher Report).. Now back to being an armchair sports guy. Here is the mock draft for the first round (without trades even though there should be at least two or three during day one.. looking at you Buffalo) and most of the picks are what I hope/think/have heard could happen.

** Some thoughts for this years draft— Not even worth the time to do trades in a mock draft but I think there will be 2 or 3 at least on Thursday night. The Bills or the Cardinals have to trade up with the Colts or the Bears to grab the 4th best QB unless they really think Lamar Jackson can be something. Teams are so obsessed with picking players from “positions of importance” instead of someone like Saquon Barkley or Quenton Nelson who are almost sure fire Pro Bowlers. It looks like the execs might be starting to understand WR is the least important position on the field and the chance your 1st round receiver hits is small but don’t forget guys like Calvin Ridley and James Washington, who are great router runners, are usually the most projectable WRs. There are always a number of teams that don’t even fill there most important needs on draft weekend for some reason. There are always a couple players in the last half of the draft that no one will expect to be drafted that will be drafted.

Sam Darnold-QB-USC       Could be Phillip Rivers and Hopefully not Blake Bortles

If they fuck this one up they might be the worst franchise in the history of sports… Well… Josh Allen or Baker Mayfield to the browns it is? Darnold is a big time playmaker who seems to be the safest pick but could end up being Blake Bortles, while Allen is a long shot but could end up being Ben Roethlisberger and some people say Baker is Drew Brees OR is he really a small, screen throwing QB from the Big 12 (Manziel).. It’s crazy that pretty much every “draft expert” loves a different QB for a different reason but for what its worth I think in a sane world Josh Rosen should be the pick here but people can’t seem to get past his shitty personality (Aaron Rodgers?)

Saquon Barkley-RB-Penn State            Could be Leveon Bell and Hopefully not Trent Richardson

Okay, I get the idea that you don’t take a RB this early because there is so much value all over the draft! BLAH BLAH BLAH. Barkley could be the next Leveon Bell and with the Giants being only a couple players away from competing, I think Barkley and a rebuilt line could put them in the hunt again. They lock up a A+ score just by picking this guy with their highest pick since Manning.

Josh Rosen-QB-UCLA               Could be Aaron Rodgers and Hopefully not Jay Cutler

This is more who I think they SHOULD take than who I think they WILL take. It seems like they really like Mayfield but in my eyes Rosen is the best QB in the draft and would be a steal at #3. This reminds me a lot of Rodgers falling all the way down the draft because of his California cool attitude and that one worked out pretty well. In my eyes this guy is the best all around QB in the draft.

Bradley Chubb-DE-NC State          Could be Joey Bosa and Hopefully not DeForest Buckner

The Browns could luck up and get the second best player in the draft at #4, while getting a young talented young RB later in the draft (Derrius Guice). Chubb and Myles Garrett would make an unreal tandem on the edge for 5 to 10 years.

(5) DENVER BRONCOS  (Might trade back)

Baker Mayfield-QB-Oklahoma              Could be Drew Brees and Hopefully not Johnny Manziel

Supposedly they really like Rosen and Mayfield so when Baker falls here I think they scoop him up instead of trading out. I don’t see how they could take Josh Allen in any world because of the Paxton Lynch aftershock. They could still trade out here and give Lynch one more year to learn under Keenum. Some say Drew Brees and some say Johnny Manziel. Elway would be betting his job on Baker which makes me think they might actually trade out. Who knows with this one.

Quenton Nelson-OG-Notre Dame              Could be Zach Martin and Hopefully not Chance Warmack

This might be the Bills or the Cardinals jumping in to get the last top QB left but with no trades I think the Colts have to decide between an anchor on defense with Smith or some protection for Luck in Nelson and the latter wins out.

Derwin James-DB-Florida State               Could be Earl Thomas and Hopefully not Kenny Vaccaro

I’m not sure some people are sold on how to use Fitzpatrick so the Bucs pick up a local player who could possibly be the next Eric Berry. The best safety in the draft will team up with 2016 first round pick Haergraves at CB to solidify the defense for the next couple years or at least make up for the Haergraves pick if he has another bad year.

(8) CHICAGO BEARS  (Might Trade Back)

Denzel Ward-CB-Ohio State                  Could be Chris Harris and Hopefully not Justin Gilbert

This pick breaks the heart of all the experts who picked Nelson to fall here and the next 10 teams who were hoping Ward would fall to them (including my beloved packers). Ward can team up with Fuller to help stop Rodgers, Stafford, and Cousins in the division. If Allen is still left here I don’t think there is any way they don’t trade back with the Bills or the Cardinals.

Roquan Smith-LB-Georgia                   Could be Jonathan Vilma and Hopefully not Aaron Curry

Perfect fit for the 49ers. They find a player to anchor their defense like Willis and Bowman did in the 49ers playoff runs with Harbaugh.

Minkah Fitzpatrick-DB-Alabama                Could be Eric Berry and Hopefully not Dee Milliner

I have absolutely no idea what Gruden does here but I do think he goes defense here and with possibly the best defensive back still on the board he scoops him up and will figure out how to use him later.

Vita Vea-NT-Washington                       Could be Haloti Ngata and Hopefully not Danny Shelton

The perfect scenario for the Dolphins (besides a QB falling which I’m not sold on them giving up on Tannehill just yet) to fill one of their many holes by replacing big man Suh with a bigger man in Vea. Nose Tackles are always hit or miss but at least they get to fill one of there biggest needs and can grab a QB in round 2 or 3.

(12) BUFFALO BILLS (I think they could/should trade up for Josh Allen)

Tremaine Edwards-LB-Virginia Tech                            Could be Anthony Barr and Hopefully not Bud Dupree

I don’t see any way the Bills let one of the top 4 QBs out of their grasps but in this scenario they get the guy with the most potential on defense in Edwards.

Da’ron Payne-DT-Alabama                                Could be Fletcher Cox and Hopefully not Kenny Clark

This is about 10 picks early for Payne but a 1st round guy is a 1st round guy in my eyes and the drop off after him is huge. They get the 1b nose tackle in this draft and fill a hole they really had to fill. They can also grab a RB like Guice or Chubb in the second round after filling this huge hole on defense.

Marcus Davenport-DE-UTSA                   Could be Ezekial Ansah and Hopefully not Dion Jordan

At least Ted Thompson isn’t around anymore so he can draft another Defensive Lineman who will be cut in two years right? McGlinchey or Connor Williams would look great here to give depth to an aging OLine and its hard not to grab the top WR Ridley or Josh Jackson (who could be the next Richard Sherman). Was really hoping for Ward or James to fall here and I'‘m really hoping they can trade up for one of those guys but if not then it looks like we get our hearts broken again with Davenport who could very well be the second coming of Dion Jordan or maybe our prayers will work and he’s Ziggy Ansah.

(15) ARIZONA CARDINALS  (Not sure if they are sold on Jackson, think they could trade back and take Rudolph)

Lamar Jackson-QB-Louisville                      Could be Michael Vick and Hopefully not Pat White

I think they either trade up or they are just fine with Jackson or Rudolph. I have already written what I thought about Jackson and honestly I hope he proves me wrong by being the first running QB to work in the NFL since Michael Vick but I do think either the Cardinals or Bills trade up and grab the 4th best QB.

Harold Landry-DE-Boston College                       Could be Brandon Graham and Hopefully not Quinton Coples

I don’t see how they take a WR here after signing 10 in the off-season and drafting Perriman recently but you never know with Ozzie Newsome. Landry could give them a young edge rusher to take over for Suggs soon.

Rashaan Evans-LB-Alabama                     Could be NaVarro Bowman and Hopefully not Rolando McClain

I think Evans is underrated at pick 17 because of his sideline to sideline skills at MLB. Could become the heart to the Chargers defense.

Will Hernandez-OG-UTEP                           Could be Mike Iupati and Hopefully not Danny Watkins (FIRST ROUND GUARDS ARE USUALLY GREAT PLAYERS!)

Hopefully for them this is the start of them trying to build up that running game back to what it was with Marshawn Lynch. The mauling Hernandez in the first round and someone like Chubb or Michel in the second would be a slam dunk. They really need a replacement for Sherman so Jackson could be in play here too.

Calvin Ridley-WR-Alabama                          Could be Greg Jennings/Juju Smith-Schuester and Hopefully not Jordan Matthews

Cowboys fans would GO CRAZY at the draft if Ridley falls to them. This could me more of a perfect fit in my mind pick but I think Ridley is pro ready and could be a Robert Woods type of player like he was last year with the Rams.

Taven Bryan-DT-Florida                            Could be J.J, Watt (EH on this comparison) and Hopefully not Sharriff Floyd

Matt Patricia mentioned he wanted to rebuild the defense from the inside so they go with a high potential, possibly a bust DT for the heart of the defense. This pick could really go anywhere and if one of the QBs slip then Patricia could go all Patriots on us and trade back.

James Daniels-OL-Iowa                      Could be one of the Pouncey brothers and Hopefully not Chris Spencer??

Not an exciting move but they get a much needed upgrade in the interior of there offensive line that could hopefully help open up some holes for Joe Mixon next year.

Mason Rudolph-QB-OK State                      Could be Matt Ryan and Hopefully not Brandon Weeden or no-one might ever draft a OK State QB again

Even though Rudolph isn’t projected as a 1st round guy I think he slips into the backside of the round just because he is a projectable QB. The Bills never seemed fond of Tyrod Taylor (for a damn good reason) so I don’t see them trying to get Lamar at any point. Grabbing Rudolph with their second 1st round pick seems like a solid move for a QB needy team.

Leighton Vander Esch-LB-Boise State               Could be Clay Matthews and Hopefully not Shea McClellin

A Patriots type of player that would feel a major need on that defense. Biggest need is probably at OLine but that can fix that next with whoever falls next in Miller or Williams.

DJ Moore-WR-Maryland                        Could be Stefon Diggs and Hopefully not Michael Floyd

Like the Ravens, these guys always seem to need an upgrade at WR so the speedy Moore could help Newton stretch the field.

Lorenzo Carter-DE-Georgia                    Could be Chandler Jones and Hopefully not Marcus Smith

This is a team drafting a player a little early because they need an edge rusher something serious. They can fill there other needs with all the depth in the draft in round 2 and 3.

Jaire Alexander-CB-Louisville                      Could be Trumaine Johnson and Hopefully not DJ Hayden

With no defensive tackle available here worth the pick, the Falcons go with the best player available in Alexander. You can never have to many CBs and some people say Alexander could be the best CB coming out of the draft in the long run.

Hayden Hurst-TE-South Carolina                Could be Dallas Clark (don't forget how good he was with Manning) and Hopefully not Coby Fleener

Once again this would be a perfect spot for a team with a solid roster to grab up Jackson or Rudolph but if they aren’t there then Hurst could be a nice weapon for Brees. With the Brees window only being another 2 or 3 years longer, Hurst’s age should matter less to the Saints than to most.

Josh Jackson-CB-Iowa                          Could be Richard Sherman and hopefully not Darqueze Denard

They REALLY need a ILB to replace Ryan Shazier but they cant get that later if Evans doesn’t fall to them or they don’t trade up. Jackson has become underrated because he is slower than the other corners but this guy was the best corner in college football last year and has the best ball skills in the draft.

Mike Hughes-CB-UCF                            Could be Janoris Jenkins and Hopefully not William Jackson

The Jags don’t have many holes at all but after losing Aaron Colvin in free agency they could grab up one of the last CBs worthy of a first round pick.

Connor Williams-OT-Texas                   Could be Jake Mathews and Hopefully not Eben Britton

This team is so stacked. How did we let them get so good Packers!?!? They should either grab a Offensive Lineman to keep there big money QB upright or one of the best defensive backs available to grab some depth for a stacked defense.

Kolton Miller-OT-UCLA                     Could be Nate Solder and Hopefully not Anthony Constanzo

If they don’t grab Rudolph then an Offensive Lineman like Miller or Williams would be just what they need to fill the hole left by Solder at tackle. It would be more of a patriot type move to draft a lineman and a linebacker in the first round and then get a QB in the second or third anyways.

Christian Kirk-WR-Texas A&M               Could be Jarvis Landry and Hopefully not Phillip Dorset

Having a roster like the Eagles allows them to pick from pretty much any position and adding Kirk to the receiving core on top of him being the best punt/kick returner in the draft would only add explosiveness to one of the best offensive teams in the league.
